Thoughts at the End of the Day

We finally got to see The Two Towers on DVD the other day. After finishing the movie and meditating on both what I had seen and the book itself, I was struck again by the ability LOTR has to truly inspire. Tolkien does an excellent job of portraying true heroes, people (and elves and dwarfs) that embody traits and qualities that I would like to see in my own life. Aragorn, for example, can not only knock an orc's head off, but he also seeks to be fair, just, and merciful to those that he leads.

While mulling that over, I ran across this interview, of the author of a new book that describes, among other things, the desires that C.S. Lewis and Tolkien had "to bring myth and legend—and Truth—to modern readers." The interview is interesting. When able, I would like to get the book.

The sad reality of today seems that we have very few, if any, true heroes; no modern myths exist to encourage honor and fidelity. We only have witless celebrities and fawning entertainment/news networks that will glorify every move of theirs. What has Britney Spears encouraged and inspired, other than 10 year old girls to view themselves as sexual objects?

(insert segue of choice here)

This coming week looks to be fun. I get to go to Atlanta (sadly, with my better half remaining back in Baltimore) for work, which means that I get to see my family and some good friends back there. My wife begins her last class of grad school (!) this Tuesday, and I begin my first three classes of seminary at the end of the week. Lord willing, Towson University will approve our appeal for in-state residency and my car will hold together (both of these items have been in strong doubt lately).

As the day ends, so does this entry.

Come to Chattanooga!

Except that Peter Jackson wouldn't know justice or wisdom if it bit him on the hind end. Don't get me started, I just really hate those movies. Or do get me started, if you want

I agree with you. Jackson's movie credits before LOTR are not terribly impressive. When I wrote that, I was thinking much more of the book than the movies. And, while the movies do show many aspects of the book, at least Faramir, Gimli, and Aragorn are much more heroic and noble in the book. Beyond that, I'll bite - why do you "really hate those movies"?
