Blog of the Day

Eye on The Left is a blog I recently placed in my Feedreader that I am finding quite entertaining. I personally find this interesting because of the sheer level of shrillness leveled at Republicans in general and Bush in particular. Conservatives certainly have their own invective, such as here, here, or here, but they seem to have a little bit more of a sense of humor.

One could argue that liberals are simply doing to Bush what conservatives did to Clinton when he was in power. I think I agree with that, to a point; many conservatives at the time seemed to simply despise Clinton because he was Clinton, tireless repeating the mantra that Clinton was a lying weasel. Likewise many liberals continue to repeat the tired old mantra that Bush is an incompetent idiot who stole the election. The creed is the reason.

Of course, the difference in my mind is that, while I do not agree with many of his policies, it does seem that Bush is genuinely trying to do the right thing. And I have a difficult time seeing what else could be done in the war on terror. Former president Clinton, however, from all that I have seen, really did seem to be a liar, adulterer, and generally too afraid of public opinion to accomplish difficult foreign affairs tasks.

The question in my mind right now is this: has political diatribe always been this violent and the internet is simply allowing it to be propagated quicker, or is this a relatively new phenomenon, an indication of the decreasing level of civility and common courtesy in culture today? My inclination now is towards the former, but I'll welcome all takers.

This crap was going well before my day. I even wrote about it: What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun. It's in that book I wrote called Ecclesiastes. So, I think you're right on the money.
