Luther

I just came back from seeing Luther. I should admit up front that I came in already biased towards the movie. I had read some good things about it and I was happy to see someone make a movie about Martin Luther with decent production value that wasn't an attempt at character assassination.

So it should be no surprise that I thought the movie was fantastic. There were some issues in it: the dialog at parts seemed to be out of sync with the action, there were a few historical liberties, and the peasant's revolt wasn't explained too well were some downsides.

Still, the movie was an excellent presentation of Luther as he battled his own "inner demons" trying to find out what the truth was and how to stand for it. His pastoral concern for his own people was greatly emphasized, demonstrating that he didn't do what he did just to puff himself up, but because he genuinely cared for the impoverished people under his care that the church was ruthlessly exploiting to build larger churches. One of the best presentations of the gospel I've ever seen in the theater was present in one of his sermons. And his courage and desire to do what was right, as given in the Bible, was incredibly inspiring.

In this current movie season, you could go see The Rock beat up bad guys. You could see Jack Black be, well, Jack Black. You could go see vampires and werewolves duke it out Matrix style. Or, you could see a great story of a man earnestly striving to do what was right. Even if you're not Protestant, I think its still a movie worth seeing just for that reason.
