Current Church Histories

Starting next Sunday, I am going to be teaching a short, 4-week Sunday School for adults at my church on Early Church History. As I've been reviewing key events in the development of Christianity, it has been interesting to compare what early Christians wrestled with and argued about and what modern Christians wrestle with and argue about. Early Christians argued fiercely over philosophical and theological issues such as the nature of Jesus and who God was. Lately, however, it seems Christians have been wrestling more with ethical issues: recognition and ordination of homosexuals, the validity of female pastors, abortion, and so on. It would be an interesting to study this more. Is this the result of the Greek philosophical systems finally being purged from our theology, or is it merely what happens as a church changes with culture, or are we just stupider?

So many questions, so little time ...
