Regional Politics

I just got back from Atlanta yesterday afternoon from some meetings for work. One of the amusing things I noticed again while flying back and forth from BWI to Hartsfield was the stark contrast in the types of books sold in the two airports.

The bookstores/newsstands in BWI are overwhelmingly anti-Bush right now. Authors such as Michael Moore, Al Franken, and Alan Colmes all have their books in the main displays. And while Kerry hagiographies are also easy to find, anything supporting Bush requires some digging.

On the other hand, Hartsfield bookstores/newsstands prominently and overwhelmingly display books by authors such as Sean Hannity (a former ATL talk show host), Ann Coulter, and other miscellaneous pro-Bush, pro-conservative tomes. Dude, Where's My Country is there, but might take a while to find.

This contrast is amusing as it buttresses the regional stereotypes that I already have of the "Conservative South" and "Liberal North." It is also amusing as I suspect the two sides feed off of one another: the more one side hates Bush and thinks he's out to destroy the world, the more the other side reveres him, and vice versa.

At the same time, I find myself strangely bothered to see the divide so sharp both politically and geographically.

whoohoo, let's break out the rifles and duke it out for good. I have no idea what I'm talking about and will offend everyone! I don't even know for sure if I'm North or South. I'm in Delaware.

By the way I'm updating my xanga site a little more often now. Aint it cool?
