From the BBC: Google's Gmail could be blocked

Gmail, the planned free e-mail service from Google, could be facing strong legal opposition in California.

Draft legislation is being drawn up by Democratic Senator Liz Figueroa, who calls Gmail "an invasion of privacy".

It's not as if Google will be forcing users with a gun to their head to use Gmail, nor has it yet been shown conclusively that Google will be violating anyone's privacy to the extent that the government should be involved. For that matter, what about all the people who do go out and create genuine privacy violations, such as the spyware makers?

Doesn't this senator have better things to do?

UPDATE: in pari delicto gives significantly more well-thought out reasons here.

My disdain for the oh-so-delicately-invasive Gmail is overshawdowed only by my intense desire that California would slough off into the ocean.
