Do no evil?

I installed the Google Desktop Search this morning to see how well it did at searching and indexing my data. Shortly after installing, XP forced me to shut down. After rebooting, it would shutdown again, completely blocking me from accessing any of my data.

This continued until I remembered how to boot into the XP safe mode. I was then able to uninstall Desktop Search and boot normally. However, even after that, I had to remove my VPN software, Norton AntiVirus, and every other application I could think of that was accessing the network before my computer could even see my network once again.

It took me three hours to do all of this. I'm not as frustrated now as I was two hours ago, but I'm extremely disappointed in Google. Yes, it is in Beta and, yes, my computer probably has a mildly unusual networking configuration (I suspect the VPN was the chief conflict). Still, I haven't had a single program crap my computer, and thus my workday, up this bad in a while.

Weird that that should happen. It has worked flawlessly on my computer. I guess I should consider myself lucky?

This is exactly why I haven't yet tried to install it...
